With families confined to their homes as a result of the COVID-19 stay-at-home orders, there has been a nationwide increase in domestic violence incidents. During this difficult time, it is important to remember that you are not alone, and that there are many resources available to assist victims of domestic violence.
In cases of immediate danger or need, call 911. Minnesota Day One Crisis Line (218-303-9549) offers 24/7 free and confidential help.
There are also legal protections that can be sought in cases of domestic conflict, including a Harassment Restraining Order or Order for Protection. An Order for Protection can provide temporary or long-term protections to a victim by restraining the abuser from further abuse, removing the abuser from the home, prohibiting contact with the victim(s), and requiring the abuser to maintain distance from the victim’s residence or workplace. An Order for Protection can also cover the victim’s children and can address issues of temporary custody and parenting time.
